What kind of slot is Legacy of Dead?
Legacy of Dead is a five-reel, three-row video slot from the Swedish studio Play’n GO, released on 2 January 2020. The setting is an Egyptian burial chamber: sandstone walls, carved masks, a golden pharaoh and the gold-on-blue colours that half the slot market seems to share. The theme breaks no new ground. What brings players back is the bonus, which rewards patience with occasional, very large results.
If the layout feels familiar, there is a reason. Legacy of Dead follows the formula Play’n GO made famous with Book of Dead: ten lines, a combined wild and scatter, and free spins in which one randomly picked symbol can stretch up a whole reel. Treat it as a second take on that recipe, with fresh artwork and its own maths model, rather than a copy you can assume behaves the same way.
Who it suits
This is a game for people who are comfortable with long, quiet stretches. Base-game wins tend to be small, while most of the potential sits inside the free spins round, and that round can keep you waiting. If you want something happening on every spin, a tumbling or cluster game will feel livelier. If you enjoy the slow build towards one feature, Legacy of Dead handles that tension well.
The symbols
- Lower-value card symbols fill most of the reels and pay little on their own.
- Egyptian picture symbols pay more, with the pharaoh king at the top of the table, according to OLBG.
- The Altar symbol is the one to watch: it substitutes on lines and also opens the free spins.
The art is clean rather than flashy. Reels sit inside a temple doorway, the soundtrack is low drums and wind, and nothing on screen gets in the way of reading a win. On a small phone screen that restraint actually helps.
Legacy of Dead demo: free play on this page
The box below loads Play’n GO’s own demo build. It is the same game file casinos use; the only difference is that your balance is fun money. Nothing won in it can be cashed out, and nothing lost costs you a penny. The game stays unloaded until the button is pressed, so the page stays quick on mobile data.
Free play is the cheapest way to learn the one thing that matters most about this slot: how long the gaps between features can be. In your first few hundred spins, I would keep an eye on four things.
- Spins between bonuses. Note the spin count each time free spins arrive. Long gaps are normal for high-variance games, and meeting them with pretend credits beats discovering them with your own money.
- The paytable. Open it and read how the expanding symbol and retriggers are described, and which return figure the build reports. That screen is the most reliable rulebook you will find.
- Active lines. The game lets you reduce the number of lines. Keep all ten switched on; fewer lines make each spin cheaper but leave fewer ways for the same symbols to pay.
- The gamble button. Try it once or twice with fake money, then decide whether you ever want it near a real balance.
A slower, button-by-button walkthrough lives on the Legacy of Dead free play page, along with answers about mobile play and accounts.

Free spins, the expanding symbol and the gamble feature
Strip away the decoration and Legacy of Dead has three moving parts. Each changes how a session feels, so it is worth knowing them before you play.
Ten lines and the Altar wild
Wins pay from left to right on up to ten lines. The Altar symbol does two jobs at once: it stands in for regular symbols to complete a line, and it acts as the scatter that unlocks the bonus. OLBG notes that you can play with fewer than ten lines, though I can’t see much reason to.
How free spins start
Land three or more Altar Wild/Scatter symbols anywhere on the reels and the free spins round begins. Play’n GO and OLBG agree on that trigger. The number of spins you start with is less settled: OLBG prints two different figures on the same page, so rather than repeat a number I can’t stand behind, I’d point you to the paytable inside the game.
The special expanding symbol
Before the first free spin, the game picks one symbol at random to act as the special expanding symbol. When it lands during the round in a winning position, it expands to cover its reel. Play’n GO describes this as creating more ways to win, and it is what turns two or three scattered symbols into a screen-wide payout. Draw a top picture symbol and the bonus has real upside; draw a low card symbol and the round usually ends up modest.
Retriggers add more expanders
Altar symbols can land again while the free spins are running, which Play’n GO confirms. According to OLBG, each retrigger also adds another expanding symbol, up to nine in total. Once two or three expanders are in play at the same time, the reels start to look very busy.
The gamble option
After a base-game win you can choose to gamble it. OLBG describes two versions: guess a card’s colour to double the win, or guess its suit to multiply it by four, up to five times in a row. There is no skill involved and it does not improve your long-run return. I treat it as an optional thrill rather than a strategy, and most of the time I leave it alone.
Legacy of Dead RTP, volatility and maximum win
The headline return to player is 96.58%. That is the number most reviews quote, OLBG included. It is also the best-case setting rather than a promise, because OLBG lists four lower versions that casinos are allowed to pick.
| Version | Theoretical return | Where the figure comes from |
|---|---|---|
| Highest | 96.58% | OLBG and other reviews |
| Second | 94.51% | OLBG |
| Third | 91.51% | OLBG |
| Fourth | 87.56% | OLBG |
| Lowest | 84.55% | OLBG |
The spread is wide. The house edge on the lowest version is more than four times the edge on the highest, which over thousands of spins is the difference between a slow leak and a fast one. Same symbols, same artwork, very different maths.
Checking the version you are on
Open the game menu and look for the paytable or the game rules; Play’n GO titles state the theoretical return there. If a casino only runs one of the lower settings, that is useful to know before you deposit, and you are free to play the same slot elsewhere.
Volatility
Legacy of Dead is a high-volatility slot, and OLBG goes further by labelling it very high. In plain terms: plenty of small or empty spins, a feature that can take a long time to appear, and a huge spread of outcomes once it does. Two people playing the same stake for the same hour can walk away with completely different stories.
Maximum win
The top prize is 5,000 times your stake, a figure OLBG and PokerListings both give. Play’n GO expresses it in coins instead, quoting up to 250,000 coins through the expanding symbol. OLBG adds that the maximum comes from filling the screen with the pharaoh king, which is far likelier during free spins than in the base game. At the UK cap of £5 a spin, 5,000x works out at £25,000. Very few sessions come anywhere close, and it is not a figure to plan around.
Playing tips for Legacy of Dead
Nothing you do changes the maths of a slot. These habits are about keeping your spending predictable and the evening enjoyable, not about winning more often.
- Budget for the dry spells. Choose a stake that lets your session budget survive several hundred spins. With a game this swingy, a stake that feels fine for twenty spins can drain a balance before the bonus shows up.
- Let free play set your expectations. Run the demo first and watch how the pretend balance moves. If the swings make you uneasy with fake money, they will feel worse with your own.
- Check the return before your first paid spin. Half a minute in the paytable tells you which of the five versions the casino is running.
- Leave the gamble alone after a good win. One wrong guess turns a decent result into nothing.
- Don’t chase a poor bonus. A free spins round with a low card expander is part of the game. Upping your bet to recover it is how most bad nights start.
- Watch the clock as well as the balance. GB-licensed slots must display the length of the session and your running win or loss. Glance at both every so often.
One more thing I do: decide on a stopping point for wins as well as losses. If the bonus pays well, banking part of it and calling it a night is a perfectly good outcome.
Legacy of Dead for real money: what UK players should check
Legacy of Dead turns up in plenty of UK casino lobbies, and which site you choose matters more than which slot you open. I don’t name a particular operator here, because availability and terms change. These are the checks I make first.
A Gambling Commission licence
A site accepting bets from customers in Great Britain needs Gambling Commission approval, which shows up as a licence account number, usually in the footer. Type it into the public register at gamblingcommission.gov.uk and check that the company named there matches the site. No number, or a mismatch, means you should leave.
How UK rules change this slot
- Stake caps. Since 2025 a single online slot spin can’t go above £5 if you’re 25 or older, or above £2 if you’re between 18 and 24. Legacy of Dead starts at 10p, so the cap only bites at the top of the range.
- Slower, manual play. GB-licensed slots dropped autoplay, turbo spins and slam stops on 31 October 2021, and every spin takes at least 2.5 seconds.
- No paying to skip ahead. British-licensed lobbies don’t sell instant entry to bonus rounds, so every Legacy of Dead feature has to be earned on the reels.
Self-exclusion and account limits
Every online casino with a British licence has to honour GAMSTOP registrations. Signing up once at gamstop.co.uk shuts you out of all of them for as long as you choose. Deposit limits, reality checks and time-outs also sit in your account settings; setting one before you play is far easier than in the middle of a losing run.
Playing for cash is strictly for over-18s. If gambling stops being fun, our help and limits page lists free, confidential support you can use today.
Callum’s verdict
8.0/10
Scored from long demo sessions and a read of the published paytable
A patient player’s slot that still holds up
Legacy of Dead does one job and does it well: a slow base game building towards free spins where one expanding symbol can change everything. The 96.58% top return is fair, but lower versions are common enough that checking the paytable is non-negotiable. Players who want constant action should look elsewhere. Give it an evening in free play and you will know whether its rhythm suits you.
- Worth it for
- The expanding symbol keeps every bonus round open-ended
- 96.58% return on the best setting
- Simple rules on ten lines that are easy to follow
- Play’n GO’s official demo to try first
- Downsides
- Very high variance means long quiet spells
- Lower versions go as far down as 84.55%
- Book of Dead players will find little that feels new

What people ask about Legacy of Dead
Can I play Legacy of Dead for free?
Yes. The demo on this site is Play’n GO’s own build running on fun credits, and you need no account or deposit. Anything won in free play is pretend money and cannot be withdrawn.
What is the RTP of Legacy of Dead?
The best version returns 96.58%. OLBG also lists 94.51%, 91.51%, 87.56% and 84.55% versions that casinos can choose, so check the paytable inside the game to find out which setting the casino uses.
How much can you win on Legacy of Dead?
5,000 times your stake, according to OLBG and PokerListings. It comes from filling the reels with the pharaoh king, which is far more likely during free spins. At the £5 UK stake cap that would be £25,000.
What triggers the free spins in Legacy of Dead?
Land three or more Altar Wild/Scatter symbols anywhere on the reels. The number of spins awarded is shown in the game’s paytable; review sites disagree about it, so that screen is the one to trust.
How does the expanding symbol work in Legacy of Dead?
Before free spins begin, one symbol is chosen at random. When it lands in a winning position during the bonus, it expands to cover its reel. Retriggers add a further expanding symbol, up to nine in total, according to OLBG.
Is Legacy of Dead the same as Book of Dead?
No. Both are Play’n GO slots built on the same idea of ten lines, a wild that doubles as the scatter and an expanding symbol in free spins, but Legacy of Dead has its own symbols, artwork and maths model. The demo is the quickest way to feel the difference.
